Laser surgery will free you from glasses

Today’s advanced lasers allow minimally invasive and rapid removal of eye disorders, such as myopia or hypermetropia, including possible combinations with astigmatism. Using a microlens, it is also possible to remove so-called presbyopia, which means the need of reading glasses, which often appears in persons over 40.

We will recommend you the most appropriate method based on examinations that you can book on-line or by telephone on (+420) 577 202 202.

How laser eye surgery is organized

Advanced laser eye surgery requires only minimal use of mechanical instruments. Essential parts of the surgery are executed by lasers, implying a high level of precision and safety together with a minimally invasive approach. The eye is anaesthetized using anaesthetic eye-drops, meaning that the surgery is painless. Patients only feel a mild pressure at the beginning of the surgery. Nowadays laser eye surgery is a very fast treatment carried out on an outpatient basis, which is usually executed on both eyes on the same day. After the surgery the patient can go home with the help of an accompanying person. Thanks to the minimally invasive technologies and methods, the postoperative recovery is very quick – in many cases, the patient undergoes surgery on Friday and on Monday they go to work as usual.

Methods for laser removal of dioptres

Laser eye surgery has been developing and the latest development brought the femtosecond laser LASIK method utilizing the 7D laser (7D DIAMANT LASIK). The method is extremely precise and allows a wide spectrum of eye disorders, such as myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism to be corrected. ReLEx Smile is a less invasive, no-lamella Lasik method utilizing the 3D femtosecond laser. This method is appropriate for more serious myopia, astigmatism and  hypermetropia. Among other advanced methods are LASIK and epi-LASIK. Most of the advanced methods were introduced in the Czech Republic by Dr. Stodůlka, Chief eye surgeon – LASIK in 1995, epi-LASIK in 2004 and femto-LASIK in 2006. We also provide laser removal of dioptres using the VICTUS laser. The VICTUS laser is the first femtosecond laser in the world which is suitable for both laser corrections of dioptres and corneal laser surgery. Gemini Eye Clinic has participated in the development of the laser. We were the first eye clinic in Europe providing corneal surgery using this laser and we were the first eye clinic in the world that started using the laser for corrections of eye disorders. Currently, Gemini Eye Clinic is the only eye clinic in the Czech Republic using this laser to employ the LASIK method for both corneal surgery and laser corrections of eye disorders.

As an exception, some eye disorders cannot be treated by laser corrections; however, it is possible to attain correction by the implantation of special intraocular lenses. These concern operations where a so-called multifocal, trifocal or phakic lens is implanted. And again, it applies that the most appropriate method is proposed by an experienced eye specialist after the examination of your eyes.

Laser eye surgery – course of the surgery

The usual total length of stay at Gemini Eye Clinic is two to three hours. After registration at the reception you undergo several painless examinations carried out with measuring devices, which provide the surgeon with important information on the nature of your eye disorder. The aforementioned examinations include, for example, the measurement of dioptres and intraocular pressure. These measurements are followed by an examination performed by an eye specialist who analyses the data acquired from the devices and carries out the examination using digital reading optotypes. The eye specialist examines your eyes and you are given the opportunity to ask questions concerning the surgery.

After consulting the eye specialist, nurses prepare you for the surgery. A few eye drops of anaesthetics are sufficient for the anaesthetization of your eyes. The nurses or the eye specialist will explain to you what will be going on in the course of the surgery. During the surgery you will be lying comfortably on your back on a bed positioned under the laser. A flashing green indicator will show you the direction to look. The aim of all arrangements at our clinic is to minimize your stress before, as well as after, the surgery. The most important person is the surgeon who will reassure you and explain what is going on during the surgery. We will certainly find a way how to manage the surgery without any stress.

Postoperative recovery

Immediately after the surgery vision may be slightly blurred. However, in the case of more serious eye disorders patients can often see better immediately after the surgery than they could without glasses before the surgery. We will give you eye drops and instructions for the postoperative period so that it is not necessary for you to go the pharmacy and you can leave the clinic and go directly home accompanied by your friends or relatives. We recommend leaving your eyes closed on the first day as it helps the healing process. In the course of the following days vision improves very quickly although it may happen that one of your eyes can see better than the other one somewhat earlier. This is normal and there is no need to be worried.

The postoperative check-up is usually scheduled in the course of the first week after the surgery. According to your availability, we determine the time and place irrespective of where you underwent the surgery. If it is convenient for you, you can undergo the surgery in Zlín and come, for example to Prague for the check-up.

How to book an operation or examination

For laser eye surgery you do not have to have your eye specialist’s recommendation. The easiest method of booking is to fill in the on-line form. We will contact you subsequently and agree on the date of your appointment. You can also use the Customer Service Line of Gemini Eye Clinic – +420 577 202 202.

Other methods of laser eye surgery:

The main difference between these two methods and the femto-LASIK laser method is that a portion of the cornea is cut out instead of rubbed down. Such cutting-out is less precise than rubbing down. These methods cannot be repeated and therefore it is not possible to correct a residual eye disorder, if any. Moreover, this method cannot be employed for the removal of more complicated eye disorders e.g. higher-order aberrations. Among the benefits of the LASIK SMILE method is a smaller incision through the cornea compared to the LASIK method.

PRK and No-Touch PRK
Refers to the Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) method, where the top layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is removed by laser. The method was developed over 20 years ago and No-Touch PRK is only a new marketing name. There have been reports saying that the method considerably reduces postoperative pains; however the truth is that even after a No-Touch PRK surgery postoperative pain is more severe than in the case where the surgery is executed by the femto-LASIK laser.

Golden eye sequin

During the eye surgery it is possible to implant a golden eye sequin. The diameter of the sequin is 1 mm and its thickness is several microns. The sequin has a round shape. The sequin is visible from a distance of 2-3 metres in normal daylight. Under artificial lighting its visibility is even better. The person wearing the sequin can see it only when they look in the mirror.
