The state-of-the-art eye clinic, where the latest devices and procedures meet with the dedicated care of doctors and nurses – such had been the idea of Dr. Pavel Stodůlka, Ph.D., who founded the first Gemini clinic in 2003. Since then, we have helped thousands of people with their eyesight at our clinics. The most intense moments we can remember are, for example, a successful return of vision after 53 years of blindness, or surgery on a 106-year-old patient, proving that eye surgery is now very gentle and also suitable for the elderly. The door of the first Gemini eye clinic in Zlín run by Dr. Pavel Stodůlka opened for the first time in 2003. At that time, the only clinic was located in the rented premises along with a plastic surgery clinic. The days of plastic surgery operations took turns with the eye surgery. However, the clinic had begun to succeed thanks to state-of-the-art equipment, professional work, and a personal approach to clients. People were willing to come from far distances for the well-known work of Dr. Stodůlka – and so the small clinic was gradually becoming the entire network of branches.
Since the establishment of the clinic, the chief surgeon Dr. Stodůlka has been advocating the use of state-of-the-art devices and surgical procedures. He implemented some of them as the first surgeon in the Czech Republic. One of our most prominent primacy was femtosecond laser LASIK surgery in October 2006. Thanks to this type of laser, eye surgery became even more accurate and safer. In addition, it is the first procedure with a painless postoperative course. This method is so successful that it has appeared as the most common method for removing dioptres until now.
The implantation of the Boston artificial cornea was the following of our firsts and, at the same time, also a great triumpj. It is the method with which Dr. Stodůlka restored the vision of several patients who had been blind for several decades. The first female patient in the Czech Republic, operated on by Dr. Stodůlka, had been blinded by the inflammation in her eyes. Thanks to the artificial cornea, she was able to see her husband right in the operating room after 16 years.
The year 2008 was crucial for the Gemini clinic and the entire Czech ophthalmology field. In Zlín the first year of the Zlín Ophthalmology Festival (ZOF) was held – nowadays an annual meeting of eye doctors from the Czech Republic and from abroad. In 2013, the conference was followed by the Prague Ophthalmology Festival (POF). In addition to case report studies, these major international congresses also include so-called live surgery, and direct transmissions surgeries broadcasted online worldwide. The two conferences are organized by Gemini, by the chief of the clinic Pavel Stodůlka together with his team.
e first laser cataract surgery using the VICTUS femtosecond laser platform in the Czech Republic belongs to another milestone and immense success of Dr. Stodůlka and his Gemini Eye Clinic. Why was the method so innovative? It is more precise, safer than the traditional ultrasound procedure which had been used at that time. One of the first patients having been treated for cataracts with a femtosecond laser, was President Václav Klaus.
In January 2017, the number of our clinics grew to number 10. A small clinic has over the time evolved into a network of eye care facilities which may be found in Zlín, in Prague in Krč and in Průhonice, two clinics in Ostrava, in Brno, in České Budějovice, in Nový Jičín, in Vyškov, and also in Vienna, Austria.
The Eye Clinic in Liberec was incorporated into the group in the spring of 2019 and thus became the 11th Gemini facility. The eye clinic is located in a reconstructed first republic villa and is one of the most modern ones in the Liberec region. Thanks to a pleasant family environment and individual approach, it has become a sought-after eye care clinic in the north of Bohemia.
The autumn of 2019 was the time of great innovation for the Gemini Eye Clinic and for dr. Stodůlka. He was the first in the world to perform a procedure using a new method called lenticular rotation. Several weeks later, in collaboration with the French development team of Keranova, he introduced and used a new femtometrix laser for cataract surgery, which is currently the fastest in the world in this field and also uses robotic arm technology.
