At the beginning of September, the annual ESCRS congress took place in Copenhagen – the largest European event focused on sharing experience and the latest trends in refractive and cataract surgery. It welcomed more than 15,000 specialists from all over the world.
This year, the participation of experts from Brazil was particularly prominent. Around 200 Brazilian eye surgeons arrived in Denmark, and several of them were awarded for the best surgical procedure videos.
A new feature of the congress was the ARENA – a live discussion platform where doctors shared their experiences and opinions in direct dialogue. This format received great feedback and looks set to become a regular part of future editions.
The congress was also important for projects with Czech origins. An agreement was secured with Zeiss, which will financially support the further development of a micro-lens made from biosynthetic collagen – a special lens designed to address presbyopia (age-related deterioration of near vision). This unique material was designed in the Czech Republic and is now manufactured in Sweden.
A major success was also the lecture by Pavel Stodůlka, head of the Gemini network of eye clinics, delivered to an audience of over a thousand participants. He presented a video of a cataract surgery using the Capsulaser laser, developed through collaboration between an American startup and the Gemini clinic. The Czech contribution was further highlighted by the implantation of the Monphoba intraocular lens, produced by the company Pollux Nova from Zlín.
