On October 17, 2017, the Gemini Eye Clinic in Zlín successfully performed the first-ever correction of farsightedness using the ReLEx SMILE method in the Czech Republic. Dr. Pavel Stodůlka already had extensive experience with this technique, having used it to treat nearsightedness since 2014; however, the surgery for farsightedness had its national premiere on this day.
Ms. Kristýna, the very first patient in the CR to undergo this specific procedure, was surprised by how painless it was.
“My vision was a little blurry, but still much better than without the glasses I used to wear,” she said, describing her condition immediately after the surgery. “It was also a huge surprise that my vision was much better as early as the next day,” she added, praising the speed of healing and the rapid recovery of her sight.
Ophthalmologist MUDr. Jana Šustková underwent the ReLEx SMILE laser procedure. At the Gemini Eye Clinic in Zlín, she successfully eliminated her need for both glasses and contact lenses. On camera, she described her personal experience with the surgery, explained why some eye doctors still choose to wear glasses, and shared other interesting facts to help those considering the procedure learn more.
“As an ophthalmologist, glasses were a major limitation for me at work,” she shared after her laser surgery.
Every year, thousands of people decide to get rid of their glasses and contact lenses. Among them is Tereza, a YouTuber and a young mother of two.
Tereza, known as @mama.lifestyle, visited the Gemini Eye Clinic in Prague-Krč to correct her vision. Despite the occasional discouraging comments from people around her, she moved forward with the laser surgery. “My motivation is being able to wake up in the morning, not have to put on glasses, and see clearly right away,” she explained regarding her decision.
The surgery was quick and painless, which was the most important factor for her. “I’m such a scaredy-cat and very sensitive, so I’m really glad it didn’t hurt at all. It’s actually incredibly simple,” Tereza praised just a few minutes after the procedure.
Tereza, an employee of the clinic, decided to undergo the procedure due to her glasses constantly fogging up. Her primary motivation was the discomfort of foggy lenses while wearing a face mask and during sports.
“I used to see glasses as a fashion accessory and they didn’t really bother me. That changed with the arrival of face masks, though. The lenses kept fogging up, which was very uncomfortable and often even dangerous. I’m looking forward to keeping glasses only as a fashion statement and no longer being dependent on them,” she explained.
Ferdinand had been nearsighted since the age of twelve. Before the procedure, he had four diopters.
“I have to say, everything went very quickly. Dr. Stodůlka guided me throughout the surgery. I felt that I was in very good hands. I knew exactly what was happening the entire time, which kept me calm. I didn’t experience any pain, not even during the operation. After 10 minutes, I stood up from the operating table and had almost clear vision, just a little ‘milky.’ To those who are thinking about the surgery, I would recommend booking an appointment for an examination and letting the experts advise you.”
For actor and model Jan Ludva, four diopters made both his personal and professional life difficult. He often had to rely on contact lenses, which he found uncomfortable. He therefore decided to entrust his sight to the doctors at the Gemini Eye Clinic.
“It was a clear decision. I didn’t want lenses anymore and I didn’t want to keep searching for my glasses, so I chose the procedure. The pleasant atmosphere at the Gemini clinic helped me overcome my initial nervousness. The procedure was also very quick.”
Květoslava Juřík Kellerová, known by her stage name Magician Kelly, suffered from nearsightedness. “For me, it was incredibly important to find the best surgeon and the best place where my eyes would have the greatest chance of being safe,” she said, describing her decision-making process.
“I couldn’t imagine at all what it would be like to have someone working on my eyes—I was simply afraid,” she admitted. However, that fear later proved to be completely unnecessary. She was delighted not only with the kind staff but also with the laser surgery itself and the final result. “Then came the actual procedure, which was incredibly quick and painless. Before I knew it, it was all over, and I basically had zero diopters. I could see!” the magician said, unable to hide her joy.
“I will warmly recommend it; I will shout it from the rooftops that if anyone is hesitating, has problems, or truly can’t see, they should go for it. Don’t be afraid—it’s worth it,” she concluded.
Once she developed a sensitivity to contact lenses, the decision was made. “I switched to lenses the very first summer I started wearing glasses,” she mentioned in her video, explaining how practical they were compared to glasses—or rather, how impractical glasses had been. “It worked well enough for a while,” she added regarding the lenses. “But after about two years, they suddenly started bothering me terribly, and everything felt wrong,” she said, describing the situation before deciding to undergo laser eye surgery. The blogger and YouTuber never truly got used to glasses, so she decided to get rid of them for good.
