Dr. Pavel Stodůlka received a prestigious award at the AECOS 2025 International Congress in London, winning first place in the category Best Video – Special Interest in Cataract Surgery & IOL Implantation. The award-winning video, titled “Lens Will Tell Us the Truth”, presented a unique case of a patient with Adie’s syndrome and introduced a revolutionary approach to capsulotomy centration.

Capsulotomy is a part of cataract surgery in which a precise circular opening is made in the lens capsule of the eye using a laser. This opening is essential for removing the clouded natural lens, which is then replaced with a new artificial intraocular lens. Accurate placement and centration of the new lens is crucial for optimal visual outcomes. However, in patients with Adie’s syndrome, the commonly used method of centering based on the pupil can be unreliable and may lead to significant decentration of the implanted lens.

Dr. Stodůlka and his team developed an alternative centration method using a trypan blue stain to create a visible mark on the capsule before laser capsulotomy. This “mark-based” centration has proven to be significantly more accurate than the conventional pupil-based method. The patient with Adie’s syndrome had an excellent visual outcome six weeks after surgery and was highly satisfied with the results.

The award-winning video confirms that centration using a trypan mark has the potential to transform current capsulotomy techniques and improve precision in cataract surgery.
