We often think of sunglasses as a stylish accessory, but their true purpose is far more important – protecting our eyes from harmful UV radiation. That’s exactly what International Sunglasses Day, aims to remind us of each year.

Dark Lenses Are Not Enough – UV Filter Is Key

Many people still believe that any pair of dark lenses will protect their eyes from the sun. The opposite is true.
“Dark lenses without a UV filter can actually be more dangerous than wearing no sunglasses at all. The pupils dilate behind dark lenses, allowing more harmful radiation to reach the eye,” warns Pavel Stodůlka, Head of the Gemini Eye Clinic network.

Long-term exposure to intense sunlight can cause serious eye damage – including cataracts, retinal diseases, or even skin cancer around the eyes.

How to Choose the Right Sunglasses

High-quality sunglasses should:
● Provide 100% UV protection (look for UV 400 label)
● Fit well and cover the sides of the eyes
● Be comfortable and stay in place
● Suit the intended activity

For everyday wear, lenses tinted brown, grey, or green are ideal. In strong sunlight, go for darker lenses. For sports, contrast-enhancing yellow or orange shades are recommended. Drivers should opt for polarized lenses to reduce glare from the road surface.

Don’t Forget About Children

Children’s eyes are even more sensitive to UV radiation than those of adults – yet many parents overlook this. Quality children’s sunglasses are available, and it’s essential they provide UV protection and fit properly.

Caring for Your Sunglasses

  1. Clean them properly – use a microfiber cloth and lens cleaning spray from an optical shop

  2. Avoid dry cleaning or using clothing or tissues – these can scratch the lenses

  3. Don’t store sunglasses on your head or collar – always use a protective case to avoid bending the frame or scratching the lenses

  4. Take them off with both hands – this helps keep the frame aligned

Sunglasses have a limited lifespan. Over time, materials degrade and the UV filter may lose effectiveness. It’s recommended to replace your sunglasses every two years, or sooner if the lenses are scratched.
