Every October, we observe World Sight Day, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of regular eye exams and a healthy lifestyle for maintaining good vision. Sight is one of our most precious senses – yet we often take it for granted. What can we do to ensure it serves us well into the future?
1️⃣ Visit Your Eye Doctor Regularly
Even if you don’t have any issues, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended at least every two years. An ophthalmologist can detect not only early-stage vision defects but also serious conditions that may be asymptomatic at first—such as cataracts, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy.
2️⃣ Give Your Eyes a Break from Screens
Spending long hours at a computer or on a phone can lead to eye strain, dryness, and blurred vision. The 20-20-20 rule helps: every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds.
3️⃣ Protect Your Vision from UV Rays
Sunglasses are more than just a fashion accessory. A high-quality pair with a UV 400 filter protects your eyes from harmful ultraviolet radiation, which can contribute to the development of cataracts and retinal damage.
4️⃣ Maintain a Balanced Diet
Your eyes benefit from foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc, lutein, and omega-3 fatty acids. Include carrots, spinach, blueberries, fish, and walnuts in your diet.
5️⃣ Ensure Proper Lighting for Work and Reading
Poor lighting can cause eye fatigue. When working, make sure the light comes from the side and does not shine directly into your eyes or reflect off the screen.
6️⃣ Don’t Forget Exercise and Sleep
Good blood circulation supports the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the eyes. Therefore, regular physical activity and quality sleep are essential components of prevention.
7️⃣ Protect Your Eyes at Work and Play
Use protective eyewear if there is a risk of injury (e.g., during DIY projects, sports, or working with chemicals). Even minor injuries can have serious, lasting consequences.
Healthy Eyes – A Better Life
World Sight Day reminds us that we need to care for our vision every day, not just when a problem arises. Give your eyes regular care, proper lighting, rest, and nutrition – they deserve it.
